Rock Trio, Wallows, Release Single “Especially You” On Upcoming Album

Following their debut album, Nothing is happeningthe Los Angeles-based alternative trio wallow sought to develop their gender-fluid style. So in the few years since their debut, the band have explored their sound through everything from lo-fi post-punk to indie-folk to early ’90s dance-pop psychedelia. After researching their new style, Wallows finally settled on their new single, “You especially.”

Wallows premiered “Especially You” on February 3 from his upcoming sophomore album. Tell me it’s over. The band also released an accompanying music video directed by Jason Lester.

The single is based on the early stages of a relationship. “It’s when you’re at the start of a relationship and you worry so much that the other person’s opinion will change with the flip of a button,” says singer and guitarist Dylan Minnette. “It’s about stressing over the smallest things for no reason, but it’s certainly being mindful that I’m doing all of this for myself.”

Launching the song’s chorus first, “Especially You” details the innocence of early relationships and the nervousness and uncertainty of the “speech scene.” The song’s dance-pop beat and psychedelic synth add a sense of humor to the lyrics, however – giving listeners the chance to laugh at themselves despite the anxiety.

Thinking about what you just said
Insomnia, now my eyes are red
My head can’t understand living in the background, wondering what you meant
That’s when my eyes turned red
Thinking about what you just said
Some things puzzle me but especially you

The music video offers a colorful and relaxed visual of band members Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston on set in the video, going through the stages of makeup and wardrobe to posing at the click of a flashing camera.
