CHICAGO – Model Leyna Bloom will make history as the first transgender woman to cover the annual swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated.

The American actress and model, who is black and Filipino, took to Instagram to thank the post for “recognizing the importance of portrayal.”

“This moment heals a lot of pain in the world. We deserve this moment; we have waited millions of years to appear as survivors and be seen as full humans filled with wonder, ”she posted on Twitter and Instagram.

Saying that she was “so happy, honored and humbled,” Bloom thanked several people on Instagram, including her “lineage and father.”

“Thank you for the courage and sacrifices you have made to make sure I stay on my feet with every step I take. Now I am flying, ”she wrote.

She went on to write,

I have dreamed of a million sweet dreams, but for girls like me most dreams are just fanciful hopes in a world that often erases and omits our history and even our existence. This moment is so powerful because it allows me to live forever even after my physical form is gone. Few people live in the future, so right now I am proudly choosing to live forever.

I dedicate this blanket to all the female queens of the ballroom past, present and future. This historic moment is important for #girlslikeus because it allows us to live and be seen. A lot of girls like us don’t have the chance to live our dreams, or to live long. I hope my blanket will make those who struggle to be seen feel valued. Allow me to be a messenger guiding us towards a future of respect and appreciation for all women in all their forms and from all walks of life.

I truly believe that everything we do and everyone we meet is set in our way for a purpose. There is no accident. We are all teachers and if you are willing to pay attention to lessons, trust your positive instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks, the possibilities are endless!
