Grimes Form New “AI Girl Group”, Releases Single With DJ Chris Lake
Canadian singer-songwriter and producer known as Grimes (née Claire Boucher) recently announced the formation of her “AI girl group”, called NPC.
Grimes shared that members of this group “can be elected or excluded, with the exception of core members such as baby Warnymph,” according to a press release. Specifically, NPC will act as “a vehicle for experimenting with new technologies as they become available,” the statement continued. The group will have “generative characters and music, [different] types of animation, AI assisted art as well as spiritual technology.
The artist went on to explain that this method of presenting music would allow her to be a creator slightly removed from immediate public scrutiny. NPC will continue to build on previous Grimes albums, Angels of art (2015) and Miss Anthropocene (2020).
“The NPC can do anything that humans cannot do,” Grimes continued. “NPC will ultimately be playable, customizable, and able to meet the unique desires of each listener. Decentralized Popstardom. Made, not born.
In addition to the genesis of this new project, Grimes released on November 12 his NPC-Chris Lake collaboration titled “A Drug From God”. Lake is a DJ and producer best known for his single “Changes. ”
This single follows Grimes’ announcement that his sixth album is nearing completion. “I just finished an album, and I think it’s by far my biggest job I’ve ever done,” the artist said in an interview with Vogue. “Actually, I just did the last song two nights ago.”
