‘American Idol’ singer Ava Maybee has support from her dad Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers but says ‘I’m here to do it myself’

HOLLYWOOD (KABC) — America has voted Los Angeles native Ava Maybee into the Top 14 of “American Idol” and she’s excited to keep singing.

“I’m really proud to have a super deep voice for a woman. I think it’s time for a viola to win ‘American Idol.’ And I think, first and foremost, I love telling stories and that’s what I want to do for the rest of the season,” Maybee said.

“She fights tooth and nail. She picks great songs,” judge Katy Perry said. “She’s got a cool, you know, Blondie-esque voice, I think, and incredible focus, a wild sense of style. So it seems like she really knows who she is.”

And who is Ava Maybee? His father is Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. However, Maybee made her own way.

“Although I love my dad and my dad is a well-known musician, I think, you know, I’m here to make it on my own and I’m here to make a name for myself,” said Maybee. “And he’s in the audience and he’s a supportive parent.”

Maybee is now competing against 13 other young singers who all want to win. The competition had another local in the running – Burbank’s Sage. She was eliminated but says she will continue her career without the title “Idol”.

“I’ve been writing music since I was 16, so I’m super excited to release all this music that I’ve been sitting on for years and years and years,” Sage said. “And I know I have a new fan base to explore and share, so I’m really excited. It’s been an amazing experience.”

“American Idol” now has its Top 14 but not for long. This number will be reduced to the top 11 on Sunday, April 24.
